As we come to the close of a year like no other, as president of the Petroleum Club of WA I would
like to acknowledge that amidst the many challenges of 2020, the year has delivered significant
rewards to the Petroleum Club.
The club was able to grow its membership base and maintain an excellent financial standing throughout the year, even though many events were cancelled. This was largely due to commitment and hard work
of the Petroleum Club board, its governors and committees.
Throughout the peak COVID-19 period, the club hosted many virtual events that allowed members and oil and gas colleagues to learn about new developments and stay connected. We pivoted in true COVID-19 style to introduce wine-down Wednesdays to enable people to connect socially while working from home.
In the second half of the year, we reintroduced in-person industry dinner events and sundowners, which proved to be incredibly popular, with each one selling
out. This re-enforced our relevance but also highlighted that our industry and members need to maintain
a professional network of colleagues and peers.
As you know the club has embarked on a series of activities as it relates to an upcoming name change. This month’s newsletter contains a number of the articles about pivoting to hydrogen and major renewable energy projects, which highlights how the oil and gas sector is undergoing structural change and the need for Petroleum Club to reflect on the role it will play on future years.
While we continue to be conscious of respecting the club’s 54-year history, a name change will allow us to stay relevant to the changing energy landscape, keep our importance to existing members and hopefully attract new members.
The Petroleum Club name change has been a carefully managed and in-depth process managed by our Board and we are excited to present a new brand to our members and the broader industry in early next year. Stay tuned!
Thank you to our Board of Governors for their commitment and efforts throughout the year, and of course our membership base for your continued support.
I hope you all have a relaxing and safe festive season with family and friends.
